Safety Measures for Employees to Utilize While Operating Forklifts in the Warehouse That You Own and Operate

Blog

If several accidents have occurred at the warehouse that you own and operate, involving the mishandling of forklifts, the following tips will assist with keeping your crewmembers safe while they handle daily responsibilities that you delegate.

Formal Meeting And Safety Classes

Write a list of issues that you have noticed while observing the manner that employees handle the forklifts throughout their shifts. For instance, if people seemed to be distracted or were guiding the equipment in an erractic manner, log information about the specific incidents so that you can address the issues during a formal meeting.

Hold a meeting after hours in the warehouse's break or conference room. During the meeting, voice your concerns and specifiy the changes that you would like to implement. Sign employees up for safety classes that are geared towards teaching individuals the proper way to operate forklifts and other pieces of heavy machinery.

Recertification Requirements

Even if you require staff members to pass a test to receive a certification to operate a forklift or another type of heavy machinery, it is a good idea to have your employees practice the skills that they have been taught and taken another test to become recertified each year. Set up an obstacle course in the back of the warehouse that your staff members can utilize while practicing for a test.

Place cones and stacks of inventory across the floor and ask each of your employees to navigate through the cones and piles that you have added until they direct the machinery to an ending spot. Set a time limit to complete the course and watch each person participate so that you can provide them with feedback about the way that they handled the machinery and let them know if any more testing will need to be completed.

Safety Gear Checklist And Lockers

Type a list of safety gear that you require your employees to wear while operating a forklift and post the list on a bulletin board inside of the breakroom. Install lockers in the breakroom and designate one locker for each employee. Ask your employees to store all of their safety gear inside of their lockers so that they can change into the appropriate clothing when it is time for them to operate a forklift.

By keeping safety gear separated, employees won't be likely to lose particular items. Upon arrival to the warehouse each day, individuals can refer to the list of safety gear that is required and put on the items that are in their lockers.
